Cassiopeia A in a Million
Credit U. Hwang (GSFC/UMD), J.M. Lamming (NRL), et al., CXC, NASA!
One million seconds of x-ray images were used for this view of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A, the expanding debris cloud from a stellar explosion. This startling image from the Chandra Observatory allows for an extensive, detailed exploration of the catastrophic fate that awaits stars much more massive than our Sun. Seen in false-color, Cassiopeia A's outer green ring, about 10 light-years in diameter, marks the location of the expanding shock from the original supernova explosion. While Cassiopeia A is about 10,000 light-years away, light from the supernova wasn't visible from Earth until 300 years ago.

Saturn's Rings, Cold and Colder 09.02.04 The varying temperatures of Saturn's rings are depicted here in this false-color image from the Cassini spacecraft.
This image represents the most detailed look to date at the temperature of Saturn's rings. The image was made from data taken by Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer instrument.
Red represents temperatures of about 110 Kelvin (-261 degrees Fahrenheit), and blue 70 Kelvin (-333 degrees Fahrenheit). Green is equivalent to 90 Kelvin (-298 degrees Fahrenheit). Water freezes at 273 Kelvin (32 degrees Fahrenheit). The spatial resolution of the ring portion of the image is 200 kilometers (124 miles).
